DIY Organic Dry Pet Paws Salve
A simple, natural remedy to soothe and protect the paws of your beloved companions.
If you’ve ever watched your pup limp across salted sidewalks or lick their dry, cracked paw pads after a long walk, you know how vulnerable those little feet can be. J
ust like us, our pets need protection and care—especially through the changing seasons.
That’s why I’m sharing this homemade Organic Dry Pet Paws Salve recipe with you. It’s a gentle, effective blend made from nourishing, pet-safe ingredients that help moisturize, heal, and protect tired paws. Whether your dog is recovering from a vet visit, a grooming session, or a winter walk, this balm offers the kind of simple comfort that only nature can provide.
Why I Love This Recipe:
This is a similar recipe I use in my Apothecary line—slow-crafted, honest, and rooted in the kind of old-world wisdom that reminds us healing doesn’t have to be complicated. Just a few wholesome ingredients, a bit of time, and a whole lot of love.
Ingredients You’ll Need:
Beeswax – to create a protective barrier against salt, snow, or hot pavement.
Coconut oil & shea butter – deeply moisturizing and soothing for dry or cracked paws.
Calendula-infused oil (or Sunflower oil as an alternative) – known for its calming and skin-repairing properties.
Vitamin E oil – for extra nourishment and skin healing support.
This recipe is safe for pets—even if they lick a little after application. It's made without any artificial fragrances or harmful additives. Just pure, organic comfort, made with paws in mind.

Ready to Create?
In the next section, I’ll walk you through the step-by-step process of making this salve at home—from infusing your calendula oil to pouring it into tubes or tins. It’s a quick afternoon project that will last you for months and leave your pets feeling loved and protected.
Whether you’re a seasoned DIYer or just dipping your toes into herbal remedies, I hope this recipe brings a little extra warmth to your home—and comfort to the paws that walk beside you.
RECIPE
You have an option here, there are two ways you can make this recipe, short and long version. The long version will include the infusing process of the Calendula Oil. You can either do a hot-infusion process or a cold-infusion process. The cold-infusion process is my preferred method, although it takes 6-8 weeks, it is the safest way to ensure you don't damage the herbs and prevent bacterial growth. The other alternative (short version) is instead of using Calendula Oil, you can use Sunflower oil. When I infuse my calendula oil, I use sunflower oil. Sunflower oil is beneficial and safe for pets, so this is an alternative! You will just lose out on the benefits of the Calendula oil, but will still have a beautiful DIY Organic Dry Pet Paws Salve!
How do you do cold infusions?
Cold infusions are done with dried herbs in a 1:3/4 ration. If you grab a 4oz jar for instance, then you fill it at least 3/4 full and fill the jar completed with sunflower oil. Then seal and store in a dark cold place with no sunlight. Leave it for 6-8 weeks.

If you would like to learn more about infusions, this article is a great source.
After you have sorted out whether you will infuse or not, and if you chose to your infusion is done:
Ingredients - this recipe will make approximately 1 oz.
1 Tbsp of Beeswax
2 Tbsp of Calendula Infused Oil (Or Sunflower Oil)
1/2 Tbsp of Coconut Oil
1/2 Tbsp of Shea Butter
1/4 Tsp of Tapioca Flour (this reduces the oily-ness)
3 drops of Vitamin E (this will assist in absorption)
Steps
Combine all ingredients into a measuring glass cup, or any sort of cup/bowl that is heat safe. Preferably something with a handle like a measuring cup so you can hang the handle off the side of the pot.
Grab a small saucer pot, add a sliver of water to the bottom of the pot, enough that it leaves about 1/2 a CM of water on the bottom of the pot. Put the pot on the stove and put the measuring cup in the pot (do not pour the ingredients into the pot, we will be double boiling the ingredients in the measuring cup). Turn the heat on medium-high and wait for the water to start boiling.
When the water starts to boil, begin stirring your ingredients in the measuring cup. Stir continuously until all the ingredients have melted and formed a liquid.
Once all your ingredients have melted, pull them from the stove and set aside for a minute to cool slightly, SLIGHTLY!
While you let it sit for a minute, grab whatever container(s) you will be using for the salve. Once your container(s) is ready, you may begin pouring. Do not stop pouring your ingredients into your container(s) until the container(s) is full. As you pour the mixture it will cool off faster and will start to solidify, the faster you are, the more you receive from this recipe.
Set aside your container(s) and let it cool for at least an hour before using.
ENJOY!
